Sunscreen Guide

Get the Glow, Not the Burn  -  Your Sunscreen Guide

Sunshine feels great, but without proper protection, UV rays can lead to sunburn, premature skin ageing, and long-term damage. With Elave Sun broad spectrum sunscreens, you can enjoy the glow while keeping your sensitive skin safe.

Here’s how to get the best protection from your sunscreen every time you step outside.

1. Don’t Skip Sunscreen  -  Even on Cloudy Days

Up to 90% of skin ageing is caused by sun exposure. UV rays can penetrate clouds and glass, meaning your skin is exposed every time you’re outdoors. Daily SPF is essential, rain or shine, to help prevent sunburn and long-term damage like hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and melanoma.

2. Choose a High, Broad-Spectrum SPF

Go for Elave Sun SPF30 or SPF50+ for water-resistant, broad-spectrum coverage that shields you from both UVA rays (responsible for ageing and long-term damage) and UVB rays (responsible for sunburn).

  • SPF30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays.

  • SPF50 blocks around 98%.

No sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, but higher protection gives you a safer buffer, especially for sensitive skin.

3. Look for Sensitive-Skin Formulations

Some sunscreens can irritate or sting sensitive skin. Elave sunscreens are free from harsh chemicals, alcohol, dyes, and fragrances, making them safe for even the most reactive skin types.

If you’re trying a new product, patch test first to avoid unwanted irritation or burning.

4. Mineral Filters Offer Immediate Protection

Sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide act as a physical shield against UV rays. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which need to absorb into the skin and convert UV rays into heat energy, mineral sunscreens start working immediately, making them ideal for sensitive skin.

5. Apply Generously and Correctly

Most people don’t use enough sunscreen, which is why they burn. Follow these guidelines:

  • Timing: Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors to allow full absorption.

  • Amount: Use a shot glass (around 30ml) for full body coverage. A pea-sized amount is enough for the face.

  • Technique: Start in the centre of your face and blend outward to avoid missed spots. Don’t forget ears, back of the neck, knees, and feet.

  • Hair & lips: Apply Elave Lip Defence SPF20 to protect lips and sunscreen to your scalp if hair is thin, or wear a hat.

6. Reapply Often  -  Especially in Strong Sun

Sunscreen wears off with sweat, water, or towel drying, so reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming. Between 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are strongest, take extra precautions to avoid burns.

7. Pair Sunscreen with Physical Barriers

Sunscreen is just one part of sun protection. Combine it with:

  • Wide-brimmed hats

  • UV-protective clothing and sunglasses

  • Shade breaks during peak sun hours

If you’re using insect repellent, apply it after sunscreen and consider a higher SPF, as repellents can reduce SPF effectiveness.

8. Soothe and Restore Skin Post-Sun

After a day in the sun, rinse with lukewarm water, gently pat skin dry, and apply Elave Botanical After Sun to cool, hydrate, and recondition sensitive skin, helping prevent peeling and dryness.

With the right sunscreen routine, you can enjoy the sun without the burn. Elave Sun Care products are specially formulated for sensitive skin, giving you trusted, high-performance protection for the whole family  -  every day, all year round.
