Developing sensitive skin during cancer treatment is quite common leaving it dry or flaky and more sensitive to exposure to sun, wind and other elements. Skin conditions like rashes, itching and dryness are common side effects of cancer treatments. These may be painful or affect your appearance; however there are simple, practical things you can do to keep problems under control.
Keeping your skin care products to the bare minimum is necessary during treatment as the body is already over-burdened with
medications. The focus needs to be on keeping the skin’s barrier as intact as possible to hydrate and protect the skin. The skin is the body’s first line of defence against sunlight, chemicals and infectious germs.
The majority of skincare products are not suitable if they are fragranced and
contain irritating ingredients.
Firstly - Chose products that are paraben,
perfume and sulfate (soap) free.
Be gentle with your skin: Use skin cleansing products made for sensitive skin. It is important to use fragrance free soaps, creams and detergents. Bear in mind that anything that comes in contact with the skin may cause irritation. Some people find they have developed new allergies, even to products they used regularly in the past.
Keep your skin moist: To reduce skin dryness, shower in lukewarm instead of hot water. After
showering put moisturising lotion on your skin while it’s still damp. Apply a moisturiser to your skin at least twice a day.
Protect your skin from the Sun: Some drugs used in cancer treatment may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Skin that receives radiation treatment has an increased risk of developing skin cancer in the future. This is why it is so important to take extra precautions to protect the skin from the sun.
You need to protect your skin every time you go outside, even when it’s cloudy.
Look after fingernails and toenails
The skin around the fingernails or toenails may become dry, brittle or cracked. Keep nails trimmed and wear gloves when working with your hands. Moisturise your hands and feet often.
At night apply cream, and then cover with cotton gloves and socks. Avoid wearing tight fitting shoes.
