As we age, we may notice changes in our skin's texture, elasticity, and appearance, particularly on our hands. It's no secret that our hands are one of the first places to show signs of aging. But why is this, and what can we do about it?

Wear and Tear

One of the main reasons as to why our hands are one of the first to show signs of aging is due to their constant exposure to the elements. Our hands are exposed to UV rays, harsh weather conditions, and pollution, which all take a toll on our skin. Over time, this exposure can cause damage to the skin's natural barrier, leading to dryness, flakiness, and wrinkles.

Loss of Collagen and Elastin

Another reason our hands show signs of aging quickly is due to a loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are two proteins that help keep our skin plump, firm, and youthful-looking. As we age, our body's production of collagen and elastin slows down, leading to a loss of elasticity in the skin. This can result in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin on our hands.

Lifestyle Choices

In addition to natural aging and environmental factors, lifestyle choices can also play a role in how quickly our hands age. Smoking, for example, can cause premature aging by reducing blood flow to the skin and decreasing collagen production. Similarly, a diet high in sugar and processed foods can lead to inflammation, which can damage the skin and accelerate aging.

So, what can we do to keep our hands looking youthful and healthy? Here are a few tips:

  1. Protect your hands from the sun by wearing gloves or using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Elave’s Sun range has travel sized sun creams (as well as full sized) to allow you to carry them with you and reapply the sun cream throughout the day.
  1. Moisturise regularly to keep your skin hydrated and prevent dryness and flakiness.

  1. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats to provide your skin with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
  1. 4. Ensure you wash your hands with only the kindest hand washes like Elave Hand Wash

Manuka honey is a type of honey native to New Zealand which is valued for its host of healing properties. It is produced by bees which pollinate the flowers of the Manuka bush. Manuka’s antibacterial and bacterial resistant properties, attributed to an active ingredient called methylglyoxal, set it apart from other honeys. This means that bacteria should not be able to build up a tolerance to its antibacterial effects.

Travel can broaden the mind – but it may compromise your skin! Before setting off on that well-deserved foreign holiday, don’t forget to take precautions to protect your skin. For example, skin is happiest when humidity is between 40-70%, but inside an aircraft cabin it is often as low as 20%. Pressurised cabins also affect blood flow, leaving your complexion looking dull and lifeless. If you have ever taken your shoes off on the plane, then tried to get them on again at the end of the flight, you will know how lack of movement causes puffiness. This is exacerbated by those pre-drinks in the bar and salty snacks on board. Even when you reach your destination, you cannot let your guard down, because UV rays and a change of diet can wreak havoc on your dermis. But there are steps you can take to get your skin travel-ready.
