Is your Child's Skincare Giving You The Itch? Look No Further!

Establishing a good skincare routine for the ‘tweenies’

As adults, we understand the importance of treating baby’s skin right, right from the start, and looking after our own skin. But what about the awkward ‘tween’ years?  It is just as important to establish a good skincare routine for older children as, say, encouraging them to use a deodorant or brush their teeth.

Young skin, unlike adult skin, is smooth, soft and full of moisture.  However, it is also much more sensitive, particularly if the child already suffers from a dry skin condition like eczema. It is essential to use free-from products which will not trigger attacks of dry, itchy skin that can damage the delicate dermal barrier.

Over-washing with harsh products, along with scrubbing and rubbing, can actually harm young skin by removing natural oils and increasing dehydration. A child only needs a bath a couple of times a week - more often if they are active and getting very dirty.  Likewise, there is no need to wash your face more than twice a day.

Gardiner Family Apothecary on a mission to protect sensitive skin

Moving towards a sensible regime to help acne-prone skin

After the age of 11, and certainly when they reach their teens, it is important for children to shower every day. Around the age of 11, hormones start influencing how skin looks and feels, so it can be helpful to identify skin type at that stage. While there is no need for exfoliators or serums, you can start moving towards a regime that avoids acne and supports skin in looking its best.

Encourage your child to keep their skin clean, moisturised and protected from UV rays to help prevent rashes, infections and the dermal damage than can lead to cancer in later life. If after using a product they suddenly develop itchy skin or a rash, it can be a sign of an allergic reaction or skin condition.

Skin reactions are common in children and not usually a cause for concern, however they can point to something more serious. If your child also feels unwell, or has a high temperature, talk to your GP. If it transpires that your child has developed a dry skin condition, you can start taking steps to minimise the symptoms.

Avoiding sun damage and the skin cancer threat in later life

A huge amount of skin aging and damage – up to 90% - is caused by the sun’s UV rays.  In fact, most skin cancers in later years can be attributed to sunburn during our child and young adulthood.  Babies should never be in the sun at all, while older children should be covered up and lathered in sunscreen when playing outdoors.

Elave recommends that sunscreen be worn every day of the year, even on cloudy days.Elave Sensitive Sun SPF50+ Paediatricis safe to use from birth. This new generation of encapsulated UV filters delivers high performing, prolonged and consistent SPF protection. It contains 12 antioxidants, including vitamins B5, C & E, nine botanicals, and emollients to soothe and protect delicate young skin.

Another year, another wrinkle!  We like to blame ageing skin on the passing of the years, but is acquiring wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentation inevitable? The answer is no, it isn’t. The main culprit in age-related woes is photoaging – damage done to the dermis by exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet light.
