As adults, we understand the importance of treating baby’s skin right, right from the start, and looking after our own skin. But what about the awkward ‘tween’ years? It is just as important to establish a good skincare routine for older children as, say, encouraging them to use a deodorant or brush their teeth.
Young skin, unlike adult skin, is smooth, soft and full of moisture. However, it is also much more sensitive, particularly if the child already suffers from a dry skin condition like eczema. It is essential to use free-from products which will not trigger attacks of dry, itchy skin that can damage the delicate dermal barrier.
Over-washing with harsh products, along with scrubbing and rubbing, can actually harm young skin by removing natural oils and increasing dehydration. A child only needs a bath a couple of times a week - more often if they are active and getting very dirty. Likewise, there is no need to wash your face more than twice a day.
After the age of 11, and certainly when they reach their teens, it is important for children to shower every day. Around the age of 11, hormones start influencing how skin looks and feels, so it can be helpful to identify skin type at that stage. While there is no need for exfoliators or serums, you can start moving towards a regime that avoids acne and supports skin in looking its best.
Encourage your child to keep their skin clean, moisturised and protected from UV rays to help prevent rashes, infections and the dermal damage than can lead to cancer in later life. If after using a product they suddenly develop itchy skin or a rash, it can be a sign of an allergic reaction or skin condition.
Skin reactions are common in children and not usually a cause for concern, however they can point to something more serious. If your child also feels unwell, or has a high temperature, talk to your GP. If it transpires that your child has developed a dry skin condition, you can start taking steps to minimise the symptoms.
Elave Junior is a range of free-from skincare products that work together to protect and nourish young skin. The products contain no dyes, scents, soap, alcohol or harsh chemical ingredients that spark skin reactions. Made entirely in Ireland, they are also Cruelty-free and sustainably sourced.
Children are exposed to lots of oil, dirt and sweat throughout the day - that’s when pores get clogged and tween acne can develop. For top-to-toe cleanliness, Elave Sensitive Junior Body Washwith soothing camomile extract and nourishing vitamin E is recommended for all types of dry, sensitive and ultra-sensitive skin.
Flaking, sensitive skin conditions will often show up around the forehead, scalp and neck. Elave Sensitive Junior Shampoois an extremely gentle, sulfate-free shampoo which combines conditioning polymers and natural glycerin to leave hair clean, soft and shiny, while providing immediate and lasting scalp comfort.
Washing dehydrates skin, so keep baths and showers short and lukewarm. After bathing, pat skin dry and replace some of that lost moisture with Elave Sensitive Junior Intensive Cream, a clinically proven, emollient rich moisturiser with camomile extract to soothe, protect and promote healthy young skin.
Get them into the habit of washing their hands as often as required with Elave Sensitive Junior Hand Wash. This gentle, sulfate-free cleansing wash with camomile extract is highly recommended for frequent handwashing for dry, sensitive and ultra-sensitive skin.
A huge amount of skin aging and damage – up to 90% - is caused by the sun’s UV rays. In fact, most skin cancers in later years can be attributed to sunburn during our child and young adulthood. Babies should never be in the sun at all, while older children should be covered up and lathered in sunscreen when playing outdoors.
Elave recommends that sunscreen be worn every day of the year, even on cloudy days.Elave Sensitive Sun SPF50+ Paediatricis safe to use from birth. This new generation of encapsulated UV filters delivers high performing, prolonged and consistent SPF protection.
