The Sensitive Skincare Edit
Itching – usually not serious, but seriously irritating!
Itchy skin is something we all experience from time to time – sometimes for no reason that we can pinpoint. It is irritating, but not usually serious and can be treated at home, with advice from your pharmacist or GP if you suffer from dry and sensitive skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis or rosacea.
But if itchy skin is affecting your daily life, if you fail to see any improvement, or it keeps returning, make an appointment with your GP. You also need medical advice if it is associated with a new rash, lump or swelling. If an itchy rash suddenly appears all over your body, seek immediate treatment as this could be a sign of something more serious.
Itchiness is usually caused by dehydrated, dry, cracked or irritated skin. This can be triggered by a whole multitude of things, including food allergies, sensitivity to soaps, fragrances or detergents, synthetic or woollen fabrics, changes in temperature, dust, animal dander and pollens. Fungal infections, scabies, hives and PUPPP – tiny purple spots that can appear in the last trimester of pregnancy – can also itch.
Avoid the triggers that set off the itch-scratch-itch cycle
You can avoid excessive itchiness by not wearing tight clothes, spending too long in a hot bath or shower, or using scented and dyed skincare products. Use detergents specially formulated for sensitive skin, keep your nails short to minimise damage, and try patting or tapping the itchy spot to avoid more damage, then placing a cool towel over it.
Keeping the skin barrier healthy and hydrated is essential as it provides a barrier against all sorts of things that can make you ill. Adopting a daily skin regime, particularly if you have especially sensitive skin, and sticking to it religiously will help you to avoid causing additional damage and making it even more sensitive.
Elave and Ovelle skincare use only pure, natural and gentle ingredients to create solutions for dry and sensitive skin that is prone to itchiness. They guarantee not to trigger the itch-scratch-itch cycle because they are without the sulfates, parabens, alcohol, MIs, perfumes and dyes that can irritate and damage delicate skin.
Gentle formulations that can soothe and repair your skin barrier
Elave Sensitive Intensive Cream, available in handy 50ml and 125ml tubes as well as the 500ml pump, protects the skin’s natural barrier with an emollient-rich formula containing white soft paraffin and fractionated coconut oil to soothe, hydrate and relieve symptoms.
Elave Intensive Ointment is an excellent emollient that protects the skin’s natural barrier and with regular use reduces flare-ups of eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and other dry, itchy sensitive skin conditions. It softens plaques and replaces lost skin oils with a waterproof barrier to prevent further moisture loss.
Ovelle Aqueous Menthol Cream is a sulfate-free formula which soothes itchy, irritated and heated skin. Its gentle, non-greasy formula creates a cooling effect while locking in moisture to hydrate and calm everyday dry skin - or after sunbathing. Also available without menthol and as a Baby Aqueous Cream suitable for very young children.Top of Form
