  • 90% of photoaging - lines, wrinkles and brown spots - are caused by UV rays
  • Tanned skin is damaged skin. Delicate, freckly Type I and Type II Irish skin is at highest risk of damage
  • Cosmetic treatments can help improve skin appearance, but cannot repair sun damage
  • Tanning beds also cause your skin to age prematurely, making it look coarse, leathery and wrinkled
  • A high SPF sunscreen – at least 30 or higher, like Elave Sun SPF50+ – offers the best protection
  • Understand SPF. If you usually burn in, say, 10 minutes without sunscreen, Factor 30 will give you 10 x 30 minutes protection
  • Use a ‘broad spectrum’ sunscreen to protect against deeper, ageing dermal damage as well as sunburn
  • Wear sunscreen or a moisturiser containing SPF, like Elave Daily Skin Defence SPF45, all year round
  • Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go out, to let it sink into your skin.  A pea-sized dollop for your face; a shot glass full for your body.
  • Use a sunscreen, like Elave Sun SPF30, which is kind to delicate skin and will help you get a glow, not a rash!
  • Oily sunscreens can trigger sensitive skin or block pores – look for one which is non-comedogenic (non-oily)
  • Avoid the ‘ghost’ look with sunscreen containing invisible zinc. Zinc is known for its healing, rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory properties
  • There is no such thing as a ‘waterproof’ sunscreen – but do look for one that is ‘water resistant’
  • SPF makeup and SPF face misters do not offer adequate protection against sun damage. You must also use a sunscreen
  • Aftersun moisturisers like Elave Aftersuncontain soothing botanicals and
antioxidant vitamins B, C and E to protect against damage by free radicals
  • Blue light from your laptop or mobile phone can also cause photoaging, so sunscreen in front of the screen is also essential

It is important to look after your skin at every stage of life: childhood, teens, 30s (when collagen loss starts to occur), middle age and old age. While it is true that each stage of skin life poses different challenges, they will be especially stark for people with dry, sensitive and eczema-prone Irish skin.

Christmas, as merry as it is, can be stressful on our skin - late nights, rich food and too much alcohol can all wreak havoc. Bearing in mind that our skin is already being challenged by cold, wet weather, we need to take extra care to make sure our dermis is nourished and protected at this special time of year.

Does your head feel dry and itchy? Signs you could have scalp eczema!

Even if you do not have symptoms of eczema anywhere else on your body, you can get it on your scalp. Scalp eczema, also known as seborrhoeic eczema, is a type of eczema where dry, red, scaly patches develop on your head. You might also get patches on parts of your face, including the nose, eyebrows and ears. This can result in dandruff, as well as patches of itchy dry skin, inflammation and discolouration.
