UV light is transmitted in three wavelengths. One of them, UVB, is mostly responsible for sunburn and has strong links too many types of skin cancer. When skin is exposed to sunlight it produces more melanin – a brown pigmentation – to try and absorb the harmful rays.
A tan actually signals that the skin is damaged. Type I and Type II skin, that is fair-skinned individuals, are more susceptible to sunburn, skin cancer and premature skin ageing caused by photo damage. A sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) will help block UVB rays and prevent burning. If you normally burn after 20 minutes in the sun, an SPF30 protects you for about 20 mins x 30, or 10 hours.
However, SPF does not apply to another type of UV rays. UVA, which can penetrate window glass, is associated with ageing because it affects the elastin in the skin. Only Broad Spectrum Sunscreens will protect you against UVA and UVB rays.
