UVA & UVB Broad Spectrum Protection

UV light is transmitted in three wavelengths. One of them, UVB, is mostly responsible for sunburn and has strong links too many types of skin cancer. When skin is exposed to sunlight it produces more melanin – a brown pigmentation – to try and absorb the harmful rays.

A tan actually signals that the skin is damaged. Type I and Type II skin, that is fair-skinned individuals, are more susceptible to sunburn, skin cancer and premature skin ageing caused by photo damage.  A sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) will help block UVB rays and prevent burning. If you normally burn after 20 minutes in the sun, an SPF30 protects you for about 20 mins x 30, or 10 hours.

However, SPF does not apply to another type of UV rays. UVA, which can penetrate window glass, is associated with ageing because it affects the elastin in the skin. Only Broad Spectrum Sunscreens will protect you against UVA and UVB rays. Elave sunscreens provide Infrared Thermal Protection by using vitamins, botanicals and antioxidants to neutralise free radicals and promote repair. According to EU Recommendation, the UVA protection for each sunscreen should be at least a third of the labelled SPF. All Elave Sun sunscreens clearly state High Protection, UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum on the front of the tube.

Dry, sensitive Type I and Type II skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage,
especially for those who work outdoors or enjoy outdoor sports. The UV index is
typically low enough between September and March in Ireland forSPF30 to provide
adequate coverage. If you are going on a ski trip or winter sun break, however, you
should use a sunscreen with broad spectrumSPF50.

Eczema is a dry, itchy skin condition that affects 1 in 5 babies and 1 in 12 adults in Ireland. The cold, wet, winter weather typical of this time of year is particularly challenging, because when temperatures dip skin cells dehydrate and compromise the integrity of the dermal barrier.
