Elave Skincare supports Rugby Legend Rory Best - 2nd Miles2Mayo Challenge for Children with Cancer

Elave Skincare was proud to lend our support to rugby legend Rory Best as he took on his second Miles2Mayo challenge in support of children with cancer. The former Ireland and Ulster Rugby captain hit the road again in an effort to raise €2m to help build a therapeutic short break centre in Co Mayo.

Rory’s 330km journey took him through Kildare, Laois, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare and Galway, before the final leg into Cong on 25th May. In our second M2M event, Elave sponsored Day 3 of Rory’s challenge because we are determined to help him go the distance so that no child has to face cancer alone.

The cash raised during the M2M endurance challenge will be used by the Cancer Fund for Children to build a therapy centre similar to Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, Co Down, where children with cancer and their families go to rest and build connections with others their own age facing similar challenges.

Rory said: “A childhood cancer diagnosis can impact on the whole family. Hospital appointments, treatment and the pressures of navigating this experience can leave a family feeling disconnected and exhausted. Short breaks at Daisy Lodge provide children with cancer a space to rest, time with their families and build connections with others their own age going through the same things. They get to be treated like the stars they are.”

In September 2021, we got behind Rory as he took on his first challenge, when he walked from Daisy Lodge in Co Down to the site of the new Daisy Lodge in Co Mayo, raising a phenomenal €1m. In 2023, when he decided to put his best foot forward again for children with cancer, we were honoured to get behind him.

“I can’t think of any cause more deserving than supporting children with cancer and their families,” said Joanna Gardiner, CEO of Elave Skincare. “We are delighted to join Rory for the second time around by doing whatever we can to help ensure this fantastic project becomes a reality.”

On Tuesday, 16th May 2023, Rory set off from the Aviva Stadium in Dublin with a mission of walking between 20km and 30km every day for 10 days. The Elave team joined him on Day 3, the Kildare to Portaoise leg, showing practical support by literally putting on their walking shoes!  Six days later, after walking from Dublin to Limerick, the rugby star and his supporters turned north on a route which took them through Shannon, Ennis, Gort and into Cong.

Along the way, Rory was joined, cheered on and supported by thousands of well-wishers who lined Ireland’s roads and country lanes to top up the collection buckets. Hundreds more individuals, businesses, organisations and clubs took on their own challenges during the marathon to raise money for the new therapy centre.

Each month around 30 children and young people (aged 0-24) are diagnosed with cancer throughout Ireland. A cancer diagnosis changes not just the life of the sufferer, but the life of the whole family. However, for every family currently supported by the Cancer Fund for Children, there are another six that they cannot help due to lack of resources.

Daisy Lodge has welcomed over 3,300 families from across the island to its five star facilities since opening in 2014.  The centre offers privacy as well as the opportunity to meet and gain support from other families. Facilities include ensuite family rooms, well-being centre and gym, therapy suites, cinema and games rooms, communal lounges, restaurant – and complimentary Elave Skincare formulations!

A bespoke lodge at Lough Corrib, Cong, would allow the Cancer Fund for Children to increase the number of children and parents supported each year from 1,800 to 4,000. The location was carefully selected in order to promote peace and tranquility in an area famed for its natural surroundings and beautiful scenery.

It is not too late if you want to join Elave in supporting the fundraising effort. You can donate, or find out more about Daisy Lodge services, by clicking on www.rorysmiles2mayo.com. We are excited to see how much money has Rory raised this time around and we promise to keep you posted!

Manuka honey is a type of honey native to New Zealand which is valued for its host of healing properties. It is produced by bees which pollinate the flowers of the Manuka bush. Manuka’s antibacterial and bacterial resistant properties, attributed to an active ingredient called methylglyoxal, set it apart from other honeys. This means that bacteria should not be able to build up a tolerance to its antibacterial effects.
